From the AFC on how the Nix need to comply to remain in comp .. essentially only 4 locals in their side.. from 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: New Zealands A-League team Wellington Phoenix will be eligible to participate in the AFC Champions League, should they qualify, until the end of 2011.

The AFC has confirmed that the Phoenix, the only New Zealand team in the A-League, will be given this dispensation in line with FIFAs approval even though the club do not fulfil ACL criteria.

However, New Zealand players will be treated as locals while Australians will be considered as foreigners.

The Wellington issue has a major impact on the Football Federation of Australias (FFA) eligibility to have its clubs play in the ACL from 2012 onwards.

In a letter to FFA, the AFC said from 2012, if Wellington Phoenix FC participate in the A-League under the same conditions (as they are doing now), FFA would fail to meet the criteria and will lose the right to participate in the ACL 2012.

The decision came during the AFC Professional League Ad Hoc Committee meeting held on October 30, 2009.

Furthermore, the AFC said the FFA can continue to participate in the ACL from 2012 under the following conditions.

- Wellington Phoenix FC should be officially registered as a commercial entity in Australia under local law.
- To comply with the provisions of the Regulations, the number of foreign players (non-Australian) in Wellington Phoenix FC should be the same as in other clubs participating in the A-League. In case Wellington Phoenix qualifiy for the ACL, the 3+1 system should be implemented by the club according to the ACL Regulations.
- Otherwise, Wellington Phoenix FC should belong to the second division of the A-League, which should be newly created by the FFA.

After 18 matches, Wellington are eighth in the A-League with 21 points, 13 behind leaders Melbourne Victory. The top two teams qualify for the ACL.

Happy for them to bow out and a club be planted in Wollongong or ACT. We owe the Kiwi game nothing.

+1
It's not even about what we owe them. It's about the potential 4 million people that we won't be able to market to and earn money from. They bring a lot more than what they cost - we benefit as long as they're there and we lose if they go.

too right dibo - skysports bring in lots of money

i think they can make it work - wellington has the highest of amount of non-kiwis in their squad (mckain, durrante, ifill, greenacre etc) from any of the new zealand day since the start of the a-league

Anyone have any numbers on what the Kiwis are bringing in, or is it all speculation?

they're bringing 7k through the turnstiles every week and have all their capital in place and operating right now. in canberra and wollongong there were promises and no delivery.

guess which one i'd be picking if i were ben buckley?

were it not for the knights, we would've had only 7 teams at the beginning of the HAL. it probably wouldn't have got off the ground. another year without football and there likely wouldn't have been a competition for the mariners to compete in, let alone the new arrivals this year or any future oz sides. if future oz sides get it together, bring them in *as well*.

It should be remembered for all the trouble we have with the media in Australia RU in NZ gets first second third in coverage... that they have built to where they are has been a huge effort... they are on a long term growth phase ... there fans forum is excellent... would hate to be staring down the gun at being no more when you have done everything right..

Just imagine if FFA said Mariners piss off in two years because we have a better offer... how would you feel...

Gotta give it to the Nix's and their management... on page 11 of their thread on this topic their CEO comes on the forum and talks to them... as he often does nobody abuses him or anything like that always a huge amount of respect from the fans for CEO talking to them direct ..

Hint Hint Mariners Management...

Have a look his forum name is Tony P ... http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11420&PN=11

the nix i think need to stay, especially after this season, they have shown their mettle ,
i dont care either about this " we dont owe them nothing" nonsense.
ok technically it is NOT an australian league with them there, but has it ever been anything different in the last 15 years, as far as ican remember, there has always been a NZ team for as long as ive followed football.

we need them cos they are stable (may not yet be profitable), but are building and growing, the last thing this league needs is the removal of a licence after the growth it has had, especially of one showing its worth in V5, and witha bossman like theirs who is cleary passionate, and putting its money where his mouth is, not much more you want really,
maybe a league win and a  ACL berth just to shove it up bin mohammed shanouf, or whatever his name is

I dont know if I'm restating the obvious here but isn't the crux of the situation the fact that the All Whites, an Oceania team, knocked out an Asian team to qualify for the WC? I think the AFC are pissed off that they are providing a competition (the A-League) which allows the basis of an Oceania team (NZ) to play/train/compete. The result, as we all saw, was to provide NZ with a team that arguably was of greater quality than what would have played had Wellington not been playing in the A-league.

Nail on head there Atomic.

And who can blame them really.

Having Welly there is going to give us more trouble than they're worth imo.
