Sydney, Australia
19 November 2012

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announced a new set of broadcast arrangements that will provide unprecedented coverage and audience reach for the Qantas Socceroos and Hyundai A-League.

The four-year agreements with partners FOX SPORTS, Foxtel and SBS will provide Australian viewers with comprehensive, world-class coverage on multiple platforms, including subscription TV, free-to-air TV, internet and digital devices.

FFA Chairman, Frank Lowy AC, has hailed the new arrangements as the most valuable and important commercial agreements in Australian football’s history.

“FFA has been building the foundations for sustained growth with the success of the Qantas Socceroos, the consolidation of the Hyundai A-League and the popularity of our beautiful game with 1.7 million participants at the grassroots,” said Mr Lowy.

“Today, the new broadcast arrangements will give FFA an unprecedented opportunity to implement its strategic plans for Australian football.

“There’s never been any doubt that the game has a bright future in this nation, but today the football family can take comfort from the huge vote of confidence from our broadcast partners.

“FOX SPORTS, Foxtel and SBS are broadcasters who know football and care about the game. They will all be important partners in the exciting growth in the years ahead.”

Commencing from 1 July 2013, the new set of arrangements will deliver a total economic value of $160 million to Australian football. The economic value consists of $148 million in cash and $12 million in marketing support.

The average yearly licence fee for these broadcast arrangements is double the annual fee of the existing broadcast arrangements.

A renewed partnership with FOX SPORTS involving coverage of the Qantas Socceroos and Hyundai A-League is the key pillar of the new arrangements.

FOX SPORTS will provide exclusively live coverage of all Socceroos matches until 30 June 2017.

FOX SPORTS will continue as the primary broadcaster of Australia’s premier club football competition the Hyundai A-League, providing live coverage of all regular season and finals matches until 30 June 2017.

In addition, FOX SPORTS will be the Australian rights holder of the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015, broadcasting exclusively live coverage of the 32-match tournament.

Under the new arrangements, SBS will provide free-to-air coverage on a one-hour delay of all Qantas Socceroos FIFA World Cup qualification matches played in Australia and overseas from now until 2017.

SBS has provided free-to-air coverage of the Qantas Socceroos’ past two 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian qualification matches against Jordan (11 September) and Iraq (16 October) under interim arrangements.

Commencing in the 2013/14 season, SBS will provide live free-to-air coverage of the Friday Night Hyundai A-League regular season match and a one-hour delay free-to-air coverage of all finals matches.

SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid said SBS was proud to be part of a partnership that would give all Australians access to the Hyundai A-League and Qantas Socceroos.

“SBS has always championed the sports which unite communities and the world and with football being the world’s biggest game it is fitting that the Hyundai A-League and Qantas Socceroos will now have a free-to-air presence on SBS, building on our strong football pedigree,” Ebeid said.

“This deal is exciting news for football fans across the country and will give all Australians access to matches like never before.

“It’s a partnership which will help take the domestic game in Australia to the next level and SBS is excited to be working with the FFA and FOX SPORTS to help grow the game.

“Broadcast of the Socceroos will complement SBS’s FIFA World Cup coverage which SBS has the rights to all editions up to and including 2022.”

Fox much the same as is, Fox has exclusive rights to broadcast the Asian Cup in 2015, and Socceroo matches other than WCQ.

Under the agreement, SBS has the rights to:
• One LIVE Hyundai A-League match per week on a Friday night;
• All Hyundai A-League Finals Series matches on a one hour delay;
• The Hyundai A-League Grand Final on a one hour delay;
• A weekly highlights show;
• Online and mobile rights including simultaneous streaming and highlights; and Radio rights.
• One hour delay of world cup qualifiers for Socceroos.

Some key points 37 Million in cash per year plus 3 million in marketing set-offs. To the above needs to be added approximately 6 million per year that will be received by FFA from the Asian Football Confederation.

Personal thought’s… HHHHHMMMM on balance given where we are right now an OK deal. However we are paying my estimate between 10 & 15 million because of the failed Gold Coast & North QLD teams and if WSW had been the expansion team then a much much better deal could have been done… see the table below of this year and consider if this was what was being looked at instead of last season.

R1…C- 93, 500… TV 541, 000
R2…C- 81, 832… TV 498, 000
R3…C_ 70, 319… TV 407, 000
R4…C- 63, 557… TV 453, 000
R5…C- 65, 593… TV 500, 000
R6…C- 51, 788… TV 475, 000
R7…C- 73, 424… TV 427, 000

My understanding is we are on a tad more than Rugby Union, have a FTA match and the WCQ with a FTA network that will show respect. On balance a step in the right direction and I am glad the name games will be FTA even if delayed.

Overall we are another step on the journey and thank God its only a four year deal ….

I like that there's live FTA every Friday night and the final series is also FTA even if on a 1 hour delay. This will grow the sport a lot in my opinion.

would be awesome if the GF was live FTA as well. We stand to gain much more from that game being live FTA & IMO foxsport wouldnt lose that much

Missed ya Dib ... will take on board that some folk can not follow a thread unless it is totally clear so will allow for those with these disabilities in the future ... well not really .. time is important and OHHH not sure but for those who are reading and logic challenged I will tryyyyyyyyyyyyy...

Saw this on the Roar and tho ... a little wow that is HHHMMMmmm not sure but something ....

Anyway the Wookie posted the following on the Roar and I am sharing the Rookie's post...

Oddly enough, its comparable to AFL deals.

1993 – 1998 – 17 million per year
1999 – 2001 – 40 million per year
2002 – 2006 – 100 million per year
2007 – 2011 – 150 million per year
2012 – 2016 – 205 million per year

the top two figures are the AFL deals after TV rights became the norm for the league. If Aleague progress continues I wouldn't be surprised to see the comparisons continue.

Looks good. I've always wondered why they don't have more shows for football so hopefully this is a start of something.

TV networks hold talks over broadcasting Manchester United and Liverpool Australian tour games

TWO free-to-air television networks have held talks with football chiefs about broadcasting July's blockbuster exhibition games featuring Manchester United and Liverpool, with Football Federation Australia understood to be seeking close to $1 million for each match.

United will play an A-League All Stars side on July 20 at ANZ Stadium, with Liverpool facing Melbourne Victory at the MCG four days later.

Both are expected to be televised in the face of massive ticket demand.

The bulk of the 82,000 tickets for United's game have already gone.

As tickets for the Liverpool game went on sale yesterday and were snapped up almost instantly, it's believed channels Ten and Seven are interested in the free to air telecast.

In 2007, Ten paid more than $1 million for LA Galaxy's game against Sydney FC, but that included an exclusive interview with David Beckham.
