Craig Moore diagnosed with cancer

November 12, 2008

AUSTRALIA veteran and Queensland captain Craig Moore has been forced out of the Socceroos World Cup qualifier in Bahrain after undergoing surgery for testicular cancer.

The 32-year-old was diagnosed last Thursday and underwent the procedure on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

Moore, who returned from international retirement for the Socceroos' 2010 World Cup qualification campaign, is now under the care of a urologist who told the player that the "outlook is good".

The tough defender has also been advised to rest for the next fortnight.

Craig Moore won't give up on making World Cup squad

QUEENSLAND Roar skipper Craig Moore isn't ready to give up on his dream of representing Australia at the 2010 World Cup despite the possibility he won't play again this season after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Moore, who had his left testicle removed on Tuesday, has withdrawn from the Socceroos' squad for next week's World Cup qualifier against Bahrain.

"I'm hoping that it's only this one (international) game," said Moore, who after a short-lived Socceroo retirement returned to national team duties in Australia's 4-0 thrashing of Qatar in Brisbane.

"It was great to be involved again. I hope that will continue."

Moore joins injured pair Vince Grella and Matthew Spiranovic as Socceroo casualties, with Jade North, Mark Milligan and Mile Jedinak called into Australia's squad for next week's clash against Bahrain.

Amazingly, Moore played in the Roar's 1-0 loss to Melbourne on Saturday night knowing he had cancer.

"I got through that fairly normally," the lion-hearted Moore said. "My football gives me something to focus on. I love the position I'm in now as far as what I'm doing day in, day out at Queensland Roar."

Moore, 33 next month, is particularly close to coach Frank Farina, who also guided the defender's fortunes at international level during his six-year tenure as Socceroo's mentor.

Farina was one of the first people Moore told of his condition. "He's always been upfront and honest with myself and I've been exactly the same with him," Moore said.

The Roar captain has been superb all season, with his nous and experience also having been crucial in the quicker-than-expected emergence of young defenders Luke DeVere and Matt Mundy.

"It's nice to see them develop and break into the first team," Moore said. "There's a few of us that do feel a real responsibility to try and help the younger ones and let them know what we've experienced throughout our career.

"You just try to educate people along the way."

DeVere and fellow Roar teammates Tahj Minniecon, Mitch Nichols, Tommy Oar and Isaka Cernak were part of a Young Socceroos side knocked out of the Asian Football Confederation under-19 championships with a 3-0 semi-final loss to United Arab Emirates yesterday.

Agreed mate any form of cancer is horrific. Years ago mate of mine was diagnosed with it, had the testical removed and still died 18 months later. My old man died in 2002 riddled with it. It is a horrible way for anyone to die.

All the best to him and hope he has caught it early.
