Next year when we have 10 teams .I have heard nothing but assume a three round 27 week main season plus finals competition.

If so given that crowds (see below) are a little down to date . Which way should we go back further into the NRL & AFL season or push into the start of the NRL & AFL or play some midweek games around Christmas or maybe all three.

Below I have listed the crowds after four rounds and first compared them too the first three seasons of Hal.

Second  compared crowd averages to date in Hal 4, to the Hal 3 team averages.

The crowds are down for most teams at the end of 3 rounds these are the comparisons

Hal 4 .197, 728
Hal 3 . 226, 291 .. diff to H 4 28, 563 or 2, 380 per game,
Hal 2 . 204,984 diff to H 4 7, 256 or 605 per game,
Hal 1 ..193, 306 ..diff to H 4 .+4, 422 or +369 per game

Team Comparison of Hal 4 to Hal 3

Sydney played 2 down ..2, 395 16.62%
Brisbane played 2 down . 4, 493 ....26.48 %
Newcastle played ...2 up .....593 ...4.49%
Perth played .2 up ....943 ..12.42%
Melbourne played 2 down ....2, 412 ...9.25%
Nix played .3 down ....3, 812 ..32.80%
Ald played .2 down ..2, 751 ....27.77%
Mariners played 1 down ..1, 806 .14.18%

This season it was to be expected that crowds were down coz of the finals of the NRL, AFL and Olympics etc. Maybe if we start it in the GF week of the NRL but in cities with no NRL teams it could work.

i'd be waiting until later in the year before drawing any really hard conclusions.

the season started two weeks early in the middle of the olympics, so our first two weeks were buried, and then the end of the winter football codes' regular seasons and now finals are still over the top of everything. the weather on the eastern seaboard has also been colder and wetter than the last couple of years, FWIW.

if our numbers in october, november etc. are still well below par, then i'd be paying more attention, but even still it's not like crowds are outright bad - a league average of 13k so far is nothing to sneeze at.

I agree an average of 13 K is OK ....... my question was more to if we increase by another 6 rounds from 21 to 27 rounds ........ how / which way should it be done, more mid week, into NRL & AFL season start or push back further into NRL & AFL seasons.

our start now falls in line with other major leagues, it'd push out the other way you'd imagine into march and april.

good form in melbourne will single handedly keep the average up.

Agree with your points.

I think it will probably finish later, but will come down to ground availability.

i think jaza was on here a day or two before the sydney game up here saying that he hadn't even been sure what day that game was on until the day before or something - i think that's a stark measure of just how buried we've been under other sports and events!

NFI.

TBH until about 2hrs I thought the game was on Sunday

So so busy atm I barely have time for football other than game day.

From smh today ........ Michael Cockerill view of the overlapping / crowds ....... he asks similar questions.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/a-league/bulls-and-bears-will-test-whether-ffa-has-killer-instinct/2008/09/15/1221330748805.html

.......AUSTRALIA is arguably the most competitive market for professional sport in the world, especially during September, the traditional crossover between winter and summer sport. This year's later-than-usual timeslot for the Olympics has made the jockeying for supremacy even more intense. It's compelling theatre, watching the battle for hearts and minds unfold. So how has football fared? Let's just say reports of the death of the A-League are grossly exaggerated...

i think high fuel, food prices and high interest rates are also a factor...
crowds in both afl and nrl are also down...

with the 2 new teams next year it will also freshen things up, lets face it - 8 teams gets a bit repetitive

I dont think we need to worry about overlapping. I think midweek fixtures will cost us crowds more so than playing in afl/nrl season. I think when we start is about right, though the olympics did not help this year. With more games we just need to go further into the nrl/afl season at the other end.
