Thought in our long off season and a conversation with Style we should have a thread on our football heroes.. to help pass the time away...

As a kid growing up I had my football heroes … my biggest hero was a RL player called Bobby Fulton…

In football my only real exposure as a kid, was to the big match on the ABC, coming from the BBC. I had a couple of heroes from that time… the great George Best was up there, as was Bobby Charlton… But my football hero from that time was a tall lanky skinny guy called Charlie George…

He was just likeable in that he was somehow different and he scored the most amazing goals the one that I will always remember was standing just over the half way point and centre pitch, he volleyed a ball from the goalkeeper Clarence… you get the idea the ball a huge up and under and as it was coming over his shoulder he just went bang and it rocketed it…

Charlie carried himself on the field with swagger, and belief that as a kid was in Fairfield he was my hero…His long flowing hair, the way he carried on after he scored all added to IMO why he was a hero for me.

Here is a youtube on Charlie

Maybe.....ummmm....people that play football, who are exceptionally talented & score great goals which in turn gives us an inner warm feeling & makes us extremely happy that we have witnessed their ability....ummmm.....maybe not..

I like heroes better.

No big deal really.

I suppose I'm an old fashioned bloke who thinks heroes are the Weary Dunlops and Albert Jackas - maybe it is sad, and it is growing up in the shadows of too much war.

Keith Miller said of pressure on cricketers ... pressure? Pressure is a Messerschmitt up your arse!

Now favourite players, that is no problem - Ray Baartz and Herbert Ninaus and Harry Williams and Cheryl Salisbury and people like that.

Midfielder- That George Best clip was something else!!
What a fabulous player.

There was one interview with him where the reporter asked him what went wrong with his career?
His answer was along the lines of "I`ve played for my country,I`ve played for Manchester United,I`ve won trophies at home & abroad,I`m adored by millions of football fans worldwide & my girlfriend is Marjorie Wallace (Miss World)...Nothing went wrong!

Feel free to change thread title I actually like your "Favourite Players" Better ... but the time has passed when I can edit the post ...

Style he was just that a joy to watch .... and like so many in this world Fame and money were a tad to hard to handle... Clive James did a series on Fame on the ABC many years ago and most cannot handle it ... George failed in public, and help sell many papers with his failure [if failure is the right word] ...

It`s a strange world Midfielder..
I did a job for a guy yesterday & I was telling him about your football hero "Charlie George".
This guy turned out to be a journo who was at the FA Cup final where George scored the goal that made him famous!
I did the hard sell on him to become a Mariner`s member

My very first football hero was "Peter Osgood" the former Chelsea number 9 who was loved & admired by everyone.
He was a true number 9 when it meant you were the top scorer for your team.He sadly passed away a few years ago but I found this tribute...

Check out the throw in at the 1.47 mark by "John Hutchinson"

Style hope the bloke buys a season pass....

You were right about the throw in ... gotta be up there with the best of them..

I have read a number of reports over the years about PO and most have been along the line of your post in that he was an OK and likeable person along with being a fine player... I wonder aloud if the heart you play with and respect you show the crowd make you a greater crowd favourite more than a more technically skilled player ... meaning Matty & Hutch who bled yellow & blue and are almost one with the crowd have more appeal that a John Aloisi .. and why Danny V meant so much to many of us...

Midfielder..the heart & respect that Matty & Hutch show the crowd is certainly returned to them. These players, although not the most technically gifted extend themselves to the supporters. They are like the local lads made good but they haven`t forgotton their roots & the supporters feel that for sure.
I can recall my dad telling me about going to BRENTFORD in the old days & having a few beers with George Francis before the game.
Nothing unusual about that except that George played for Brentford!!!
The crowd loved him.(He also had a son named Gerry who played for QPR & England)

In his day there was no better or more inspirational captain than "BILLY BREMNER".
A gritty, tough Scot who loved to get under the skin of the opposition.
A fitting tribute to the late "KING BILLY" the heart of Leeds Utd
