Dwight Yorke coming to the Mariners?

Let's make this happen!

This would be great news for the Mariners and the A-League!

I am engaged, 100% heterosexual though I think I love Lyall Gorman  :vhappy:

Yorke link premature: Mariners
By Cameron Tomarchio
December 02, 2007 CENTRAL Coast Mariners executive chairman Lyall Gorman will meet Dwight Yorke and his agent in London this week but says any talk of the 'smiling assassin' returning to the A-League is premature.

Former Manchester United striker Yorke, who led Sydney FC to the inaugural A-League title in 2005-2006, comes off contract with English Premier League club Sunderland in mid-2008.

But Gorman said the Mariners' priorities lay with current marquee player Tony Vidmar and star signing John Aloisi, with both players' contracts expiring at the end of the season.

"I'll be catching up with Dwight and (his agent) Simon Bayliff in London this week as part of a 12-day trip which will see us visiting several player managers, half a dozen clubs in the UK and two or three in Europe,'' said Gorman.

"But let's put this into context. We've got a major obligation to our existing marquee player Tony Vidmar and we're currently in discussions with Tony about his future with the club.

"We've also got John Aloisi in our ranks and we've certainly been very impressed with John and his contribution both on and off the field.

"We'll be pursuing very active talks with John with regards to his future so it would be very premature to consider that we'll be signing another high profile player of any nature - whether it's Dwight or anyone else.''

Fairfax newspapers reported that 36-year-old Yorke would command less than half the $1 million he earned before leaving Sydney FC, and the Mariners planned to split his salary in two to keep him inside the salary cap - $150,000 as a coach and $300,000 as a player.

"Anything's possible in this world with regard to salary caps and service agreements and the different things you can do but that discussion has not been had in our club,'' added Gorman.

"This is purely an exploratory trip for me and the club just to see what activity is happening on a global basis, both in terms of player movement and also in terms of talking to clubs in terms of potential partnerships, whether it's an academy partnership, an overseas investment or just a player swap arrangement.

"So we've got a whole raft of reasons for the trip and meeting with Simon and Dwight is just one of those.''

According to Fairfax, Yorke has promised Mariners shareholder Peter Turnbull that Central Coast will have first option if he severs ties with Sunderland next June.

Turnbull, formerly of Sydney FC, was a key figure in luring Yorke to the A-League in 2005.

I doubt very much that money will be used to sign Yorke, IMO secure John Aloisi as our marquee and look around for some very good HAL players coming off contract this year.

I would like us to sign a quick winger who can deliver a good ball, and a creative attacking midfielder.......IMO we have still been lacking in this year during V3

We don't need him! we've got enough quality players in his position. he'd be a waste of money, i'd much rather secure aloisi for next season, aloisi would be better for the team, and the central coast in general - in the sense that he's a v.high profile, australian striker. then on the other hand we have 'all night dwight'... no offence to dwight, but we'd be better off without him.

yeah we need to secure aloisi and in order to replace vidmar we need to get another right back for next season or a young attacking mid for tommy to mentor in the final years of his career

I still do not understand why we would look to get rid of Vidmar due to age/slowness of the game they play but then look at or think about getting another older player who's only intention is to come and play some football to complete their carrer.

My thoughts would be if we want to have a fast game of football with little help from the O2 tanks head over to Brazil and contract some quick players who are 17 and over.

i agree we should seriously look for and sign some young under 20's for the position of attacking mid for tommy to mentor in their first few years and its not like he wouldnt get game time because tommy isnt exactly the least injury prone person in the team or we could use him off the bench for 30 minutes a game at the end.

What are the prospects of the kids in the academy as well as the lightning players?

personally, i dont think we should go over and sign some brazilian. nice idea in principle - but that's it. we need a quick winger who can deliver a good ball and support aloisi.
IMO - sign cristiano ronaldo!! well, i can dream cant i??

as for the academy kids, there's one wit a bit of talent called matt hogan... one for the future that boy. haha

Lightning selectors seem to disagree.

If he is to be our marquee player for next year then we wouldn't be able to keep Alosi as the marquee player.

If Diwght Yorke did infact sign for us, he wouldn't be our marquee.

Dwight's Salarie will be reduced due to be him also playing a role in our coaching staff and Aloisi would be offered the position of our marquee player.

Gorman returned from Europe last Saturday.

He didn't meet up with Dwight Yore's representative's but had discussions with Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Rangers about possibly setting up links between us and them.

Aston Villa could be plausible, there already out here on the hunt for youngblood.

They just signed a 15 yo former Wyoming Tiger's kid on a 2 year apprenticeship/ 1 year professional contract.

If that's true, then why the fcuk dodn't we have a look at him, unless he was in our academy.

It's very true, but he loves the villans and his dad is looking forward to what will be a pretty incredible change and opportunity. He runs 100m in under 11 secs and is a very tough kid, real star in the making, and much like St John's fabled story being spirited away at 15 (though they are paying for the move of his family too and St John was alone wasn't he) so I suspect he won't be returning home for a very long while... He also had offers from liverpool and portsmouth. Pretty amazing stuff. Definitely a very good future socceroo prospect at the least :)))

So long as the youngster gets to play for Australia in his older years, then it's good luck to him and his family. While it is good that a youngster is heading for a great opportunity in life, one can't help but wonder why it is this happens (kids going overseas).

This is why the academy has been set up and why folks like Turnbull are so keen to get a full blown training and academy up and running.

Very true young Pete, but it's early days yet mate and the EPL has vast pulling power. Unfortunately given the choice of A-League or EPL, most kids are gonna go.

He's a great lad who stays at our house on a regular (recipricol) basis and I'm sure one of the reasons they signed him apart from his physical skills, is the fact that he has the right stuff inside his head.

Good luck Reecy! ;)
