Craig Johnston penalty

One of my greatest memories as a kid was being a ball boy for Newcastle KB United and being behind the goals when Craig Johnston, on a guest stint with the club, slotted one of the best penalties I have seen.

I have thought that the video could be on Youtube and that the penalty would be there (from 1:35 mark).

I didn't realise that so many kids ran behind the goals to see the penalty.

Mr Celery, this one is for you:

That penalty is practically unstoppable, its pretty amazing seeing the kids lined up behind the goal, can you imagine the security guards reaction if that happened today

Newcastle legend. Funny to see how different the ground was back then, must have been great to see him playing in person.

Jeez, how much spare playing space was there?? Did the Hunter Eagles ABL team once play there, as the ground looks big enough for baseball in these shots?

It's a terrific penalty. Wonder if there is footage of West Ham's Julian Dicks taking penalties at Upton, he was UNSTOPPABLE.

Hate to say it, but a certain penalty by Francesco Totti ranks as one of the best I have seen. The bloody thing is STILL going, poor old Schwarzy had no chance.

Interesting video.

On the commentary two familiar names are mentioned......the Adelaide keeper Bobby Ferguson....is this the ex Kilmarnock,West Ham and Scotland keeper?

Also mentioned is a Bobby Russell playing for Adelaide.....is this the same as played for Rangers in the 70's and 80's?

How's your memory Mick?

was designed as an oval stadium to accomodate cricket and athletics (grass track)

from memory they played a couple of state cricket games there

when the knights came on board they squared the stadium up

It was great to see the crowds ... how at all games actually Football , league, the way the crowd were so free to roam and as a kid the best part of the match was at the end of the match running on the field and patting the players on the back ... could never in my own mind reconcile how and why this aspect of Australian sporting culture was banned....

best part was playing on the football field afterwards and being able to shoot the ball in the net!

i guess the ever increasing propsect of litigation (what if a kid breaks his leg playing on the field?) and insurance stipulations ended these carefree times

So right mate as a Kid my Dad took me to Auburn games and one day after the match the goalie stayed back and had kids having penalties shots and looking back he must have let mind in but as a under ten kid I walk on a cloud for months on scoring that goal when the bigger kids could not score.

Whoa, what a hit.......

If I was to make a video of "_this_ is how you take a penalty", I would put this Johnston one, along with Totti's against us from the World Cup (as painful as that memory is) and Anderson's for ManYoo in the Champions League final last season as examples for "left, down the middle, and right".

None of this fairy "on the ground at 50km/h" nonsense, smash the damn thing past the keeper before he is physically able to get to it.

I feel sorry should there have been a keeper unlucky enough to wear one of those in the head, assuming he picked the right way and then got there..those penalties are rockets

That's how a penalty should be taken...those guys come running in from out near the arc and then blast the crap out of the ball.
