A-League's best player gong swept up by Flores

Sebastian Hassett
March 7, 2011

ADELAIDE UNITED midfielder Marcos Flores was last night named as the A-League player of the year, capping a great season for the Argentinian import.

Flores received 618 votes from his fellow players, beating competition from Brisbane Roar midfielder Thomas Broich [495 votes] and Roar captain Matt McKay [432 votes]. Players from Brisbane and Adelaide dominated the voting, with eight of the top 10 spots taken by players from those clubs.

Amazingly, not a single player from Central Coast made the top 10 despite the club finishing second in the regular season and qualifying for the grand final.

However, the Mariners did have a victory of sorts with goalkeeper Matthew Ryan named young player of the year,
while Adelaide's Sergio van Dijk won the golden boot for topping the scoring charts with 16 goals.
