Australian FA Cup

possibly closer than expected

David Gallop says FA Cup-style competition could start in 2014, with an Australia Day 2015 final

An Australian FA Cup style competition could be a reality as early as next year, with the first final likely to take place on Australia Day 2015.

Speaking at a sports editors conference in Sydney, Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop said the FFA hoped the new competition may begin around this time next year.

The FFA hopes more than 600 teams could take part in the tournament, which will run throughout winter - therefore ensuring Australian soccer remained in the media spotlight throughout winter when other football codes enjoy the lion's share.

A-League teams would likely join the competition around September, with the final to be played on Australia Day each year.

Great initiative for the game.
Great opportunity for young guns to showcase their skills.
Fair enough it won't have an audience like the FA cup but its a start.

So long over due. Will likely provide some of the most entertaining Australian football and hopefully the kind of cinderella stories that really capture the media and the publics imagination. Can't wait.

BREAKING NEWS… yet to be officially confirmed, but just coming in on Twitter …
* FFA Cup will commence in July 2014
* 32 teams will participate: 9 ALeague teams (NIX not included) & 23 NPL teams
* The 2014 FFA cup Final will be in December to avoid a clash with the 2015 Asian Cup (thereafter, I presume, the Final will be on Australia Day)
* In 2015, the FFA Cup will be further expanded to include more teams

Had got wind of a few of these details already, looks very positive. They're going to take a certain number of each Member Federation's own sides based on their own top cup competition (so in NSW that's the Waratah Cup), so those teams will compete for both the State and National Cups.

The winner should take an AFC CL spot too I reckon.

yes it is a good idea but the problems that i see are
if the winner was a team from the wartah cup how would they be able 2 afford it i.e. travel os does there home ground even meet AFC requirements in terms of size, lighting, capasity, seating style (all seater, limited seating/ grass)
we were having problems in terms of cashflow (& we nearly withdrew from the ACL) compared 2 other ACL teams like evergrande so how are the smaller teams supposed 2 survive in the ACL if we struggle 2

I think whoever leaked the tweet is being fitted for their cement shoes and prepared for a harbour crossing .. FFA will make a huge thing of this my guess is they want the news cycle timing correct so things are being kept under wraps as much as possible .... my understanding and it's not official just what I have read is the final plan is for a 800 team cup style with the final played on Australia day ... this year is a suck and see and keep costs down...

There would be only several hundred people in FNSW circles alone who already knew everything that's been posted so far. Multiply that by the 8 Member Federations and the FFA is apparently executing thousands of people...

...or the detail is reasonably common knowledge to those heavily involved in football administration.

As for the detail of the Australia Cup*, they're obviously not going to create another Cup competition going right down to the ground - that would mean that for the might of Gosford City, there'd be the CCF Cup (for CCF teams only), the State Cup (for Association teams only), the Waratah Cup (for all NSW teams) and the Australia Cup (for all comers). It's open entry in the sense that it tails off the states' top cups. The last few teams in the Waratah Cup will qualify for the Australia Cup and play in its preliminary rounds as well as the final rounds of the Waratah Cup.

So as is the case at present, if Gosford City want to enter the Waratah Cup, they're free to. If they happen to go all Jack and the Beanstalk and make the last 8 or whatever, they'll qualify for the Australia Cup.

If they go and win the Australia Cup, they'll need to get their passports in order.**

* I hope they call it that - there was an Australia Cup run from 1962-68 and the trophy turned up in the rubbish as they renovated the Hakoah Club in Sydney. I understand it's now in FFA's possession. I hope they use the trophy too!

** Or more likely, they'll be deemed ineligible because neither their ground nor club, nor staff - i.e. they don't have any- will meet minimum requirements and the FFA will have to nominate someone else.

FFA Cup gets conditional kick of approval for 2014

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has approved the FFA Cup for a 2014 kick-off, subject to commercial arrangements.

The much-anticipated knockout tournament, based on England's FA Cup, will feature around 700 teams across Australia with the A-League sides to join in September and October at the same time as their season starts.

FFA chief David Gallop, who has previously said the competition was a priority for his administration, said in a statement the board approval for the tournament was a big step forward for Australian football.

"The idea of the FFA Cup has captured the imagination of the football community and there's a huge groundswell of support," Gallop said in a statement.

"Everyone in the game is keen for this concept to come to life, but the prudent way forward is to ensure the right commercial and organisational foundations are in place.

"FFA management now has a mandate to conclude the many positive talks we've had with broadcasters, sponsors and commercial partners."

The FFA Cup is planned to include amateur and semi-professional clubs - including teams from the National Premier Leagues - as well as the A-League clubs entering the draw at a later stage of the tournament.

The options allow for existing state and territory-based cup competitions to remain in place as feeder competitions to the national cup.

The nine state and territory member federations and 10 A-League clubs have endorsed the proposal to stage the inaugural FFA Cup within the calendar year, with a cup final in December 2014.

FFA seemed to have gotten smarter (Gallop effect)

I would expect TV deal, online rights deal, major sponsors etc.

Early rounds wont be much but if they do the draw right and you have games such as WSW v Syd Uts or MV v S Melb, I'm pretty certain it will work.

TV coverage of the flares and general mayhem wont be pretty mind you :)
