Vidmar names Olyroos squad for November internationals:

Head Olyroos Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar today named a 22 player squad to play international friendly matches against Qatar U-23 (12 November) and Iran U-23 (16 November) in Doha and Dubai respectively.

The bulk of the squad is overseas-based with eight (8) drawn from the ranks of the Hyundai A-League, plus Aaron Lennox and Brad Smith who are currently uncontracted.

This will be the final opportunity for Vidmar to work with the players before having to name his final squad for the AFC U-23 Championship which will be held in Doha next January.

Vidmar is excited about the upcoming tour as the countdown to the AFC U-23 Championship continues.

“For us it is a fantastic opportunity to play two matches against quality opposition so close to January,” said Vidmar.

“It is an extra bonus to play in Qatar so we can familiarise ourselves with the city we will be playing the Championship in as well.

“It was a good challenge for us to play two tough matches against South Korea last month and from those matches we know what we need to work on.

“This is the last chance for players to stake their claim and guarantee a place in the final squad with quality performances from this tour,” concluded Vidmar.

The Olyroos will assemble in Doha on Monday 10 November to begin their preparations for the matches.

The Olyroos begin their AFC U23 Championship Doha 2016 campaign against the United Arab Emirates on 14 January at the Grand Hamad Stadium, before taking on Vietnam at the same venue on 17 January, with their final group match against Jordan on 20 January at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium.

Sixteen (16) nations have qualified for the AFC U23 Championship Doha 2016 with the top three (3) progressing to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games football tournament.

I'd like Izzo to get a call up to the final squad - it's important to see our players getting those opportunities when they arise; for them and for u$.

The first friendly, were playing the host nation of the Championship Tournament, Qatar.

You'd think that whichever production company that's be awarded the rights to cover the tournament- which then on-sells the coverage to Fox, would be taking the Qatar v Aus friendly as an opportunity for 'testing' their procedures.

Fox just needs to ask for a 'feed' of this game, and provide their own commentary team. Just as they'll be doing when the Tournament kicks off 'proper' in Jan 2016.

Olyroo's playing in actual qualifying Tournament's in the past haven't even been televised at all, let alone 'friendlies'.

Not holding my breath. But would be good to watch if we could.

Have checked the Foxtel TV Guide as well as SBS1,2 & HD and it appears that none of the the Olyroo's games will be shown live on either networks.

It appears replays will only be shown on Fox.

The first game AUS v UAE will be shown at 10pm this Friday night on FOXsports4 & is only allotted 90mins which means it will be an edited and compacted replay of the game which is to be played late Thurs night/early Fri morning.

Likewise the other games.

The next generation of Socceroo's on show, trying to qualify for the Rio Olympics ...................... piss poor from the FFA in not securing live access to their own team in a tournament.

The same FFA who claim their trying to grow the game.

You lose if you don't have effective possession - your 3 and 4 could knock the ball around all night and you'd have 100% possession, but you're not gonna win any games.

We apparently copped an own goal at a set piece - that can happen even if you're owning the ball, and if you don't score you lose, no matter whether that's considered acceptable...

So your happy we can't get out of the group stage against moderate opposition?

We are continually under performing at youth level . This will cost us another major tornament the olympics.

There are no answers from the youth coaching staff .

I don't know how you get that from what I wrote.

I was making the point that you can have as much possession as you like, but if you don't have effective possession and ultimately score goals you'll never win a football match.

Read the post before hopping on your hobby horse.

And if we're going to get into your reply here - we've lost one match out of three. We need to finish top 2 to make it to the quarters.

We would normally need to win the group to avoid a difficult quarter final opponent, but frankly the other group's a monster (Iraq and South Korea likely to progress ahead of Uzbekistan) so there's no easy run here, and in the semis it's always going to be tough.

So losing the first match 1-0 to an own goal doesn't knock us out of the tournament. It might not even have a particularly large effect on our chances of progressing; it's hard no matter how we do it.

The scoreline alone doesn't tells us that much - I haven't watched the game, I don't know whether we were dominating and unlucky or awful and lucky to only concede one.

I'm going to wait until I actually see us play or see more results before leaping to wild conclusions.
