ACL - needs more media - for the Mariners next year.

The lack of any significance local media pertaining to the ACL alarmed me a littlegiven we are their next year.

I think it would be in our interest to do all we canwhatever that is we can do.email, call talkback whatever..to get the MV & Adelaide games more media coverage.

I asked in the Victory forum what kinda of media did they get in Melbourne and it was little, by the responses given the ACL was up against the start of  AFL & NRL, the basketball etc.

One response got me all fired up after a comment I made after a conversation I had about Steve Quartermine .and it did fire me up as he wrote what I feel.

Given he is in Melbourne and a MV fan responding to a Mariner created thread in his forum we will winwe just have to keep at it

Over to the MV fan rant.

Indio Responce

Channel TEN is doing what any reasonable private company should do ... looking after it's investment and profit margins ... They have made a huge investment on Foody ... they have to promote and enhance their returns ...

Football coverage is the property of Foxtel ... a competitor ... hence channel TEN is not going to feather their nest ...

It is no different all over the world ... media groups self promote their interest while ignoring those of their competitors ...

It could be a little different if the sport was the number one passion in the nation ... then the sidelined media groups have to cover it, in an attempt to satisfy the demands of their audience, for coverage of a major event ... (in this case the ACL fixtures) ...

That is not the case for us ...

We are dreaming, expecting coverage from channel 10 and 7 ... ruthless commercial operators, whose self-interest over rides the promotion of achievements from National Sport codes, not financially connected to them ...

Take the Herald Sun for example ... on Thursday morning the Basketball game between the Kings and the Tigers got heaps of coverage ... large colour photos ... and prominence ... being placed in the in opposite side to the back page ... a game lost by the home team the Tigers ...

The attendance for the Basketball game at The Cage that night was 3500 people ...

Melbourne Victory wins in front of 23600 at the Dome ... In the first match of an intercontinental club competition (ACL) to grace this town ... the team putting on a good performance ... the Fans creating an outstanding carnival atmosphere ... yet get relegated to the nether regions of the paper ... buried 10 or so pages from the back ... in black, white and grey tones photos ...

Fark it ... even the NRL teams coverage got closer to the back page ... full colour photos and great promotion ... and they haven't even started competing yet ...

Make no bones about it ... we are at war ... there will be no quarte given ... they are threaten ... the desperation to expand the AFL into Gold Coast and West Sydney ... regardless of cost and or merit ... is a clear sign of hostilities ... they are wounded ... they know that once we push through the next conscience barrier in oz sports psyche there is no turning back ... they will become a sport for the oldies ... slowly ebbing away as the years go past ...

Man the barricades ...
Lets hope that the FFA moves some coverage of the HAL and NT games to free to air ... without FTA coverage we are vulnerable ... tantamount to wearing leg irons ...

Can we convince a non AFL covering private tv media to take a punt??? ... that is the challenge fot the FFA ...

I wish Lowy had tv media interests ...

Can't agree more with FA media coverage in local media and the only reason I even realised that the ACL was on was that I have a punt on football matches and logged on to sportsbet and saw  the odds for the games. What a discrace but that's the Australian media that most unfortunately including so called football sports writers are more willing to write something negative or nothing at all. Not even a mention of it in the Sydney Telegraph 'football fever' tuesday section.

I bet that both the A-League teams would win their matches with Melbourne doing it easily and Adilaide lucky to get a result. At $7.65 for the double I was more than happy. I also put faith in our league and put money on Melbourne to win the CL at $17 and expect that that's what it will take for this major competition to get the media exposure that it deserves. The media in their attempt to block football out of peoples minds as much as possible would rather concentrate on the next stupid Willie Mason episode.

I agree it's a war for every other code realises the potential of the sleeping giant that is our game.

Free-to-air coverage is a must for the HAL to expand its fan base.  Good points (above) about the commercial stations protecting their investments in other codes, however we still have ABC 1, ABC 2, and SBS.

Lowy is intelligent and well connected, I'm sure I'm not giving the FFA any news here; I hope that one of these stations starts showing some A League next year - bound to help the A League as a whole and Mariners and Jets at ACL

For the good of the game,
more media coverage is needed both a-league, ACL and other games.
Especially free tv as most of us keep up to date via forums and FSN.
For next season, must have a highlights prime time show on one of the commerial channels.
This is will increase crowds and awareness for the game.
As for now....:(

I agree James.

I am forever grateful to Fox for their bucks and coverage of the game, but the FFA have to bite the bullet despite the cost and get at least a one hour highlights package on free to air every week at a decent time slot.

Thankfully, I have Fox, but I feel for those that don't and if we are going to convert more fans, we have to get the game out to the masses.

I think only 25% of households have Fox which isn't enough coverage for the game.

And the Socceroos should definitely be on FTA, no ifs and no buts. It should be on the anti-syphoning list. It's a disgrace it's not.

Anyone know if there will be attemps to enter the 2 A-League teams in the ACL in that same year ?
Or do we finish too late or something?
To me it seems perfect timing to enter same year.

Whats good about foxtel however is that it is a perfectly good reason to go to the pub and watch it there for away games. It gets me out of the house with my mates and stops me from having to explain the offside rule to the missus.

What is bad is when roos matches are on at times when pubs are not open and showing the game. Ratings would take a thumping
