October date set for Sydney's first A-League derby
Tom Smithies The Daily Telegraph June 06, 2012 12:00AM

October 20 is set to be a red-letter day for the A-League in Sydney, with the first cross-city derby slated for round 3 of the new season.

A provisional season draw for 2012-13 was distributed to the A-League clubs late on Monday night, and reveals that the competittion will open with a Melbourne derby on Friday October 5 - a guaranteed crowd puller to maximise focus on the opening round.

The new West Sydney team's first competitive fixture will follow the next day when they host the Central Coast Mariners in an NSW derby that seems certain to be played at Parramatta Stadium.

Soccer chiefs had initially planned to open the new club's first campaign with a derby against Sydney FC, but a noticeable theme of the community forums was a desire to give the club a chance to find its legs before a fixture that has the potential to pull a substantial crowd.

Instead it's believed that Sydney FC will travel to Wellington in round one, and the derby will wait for a fortnight later, with the Sydney clubs effectively alternating home fixtures each weekend.

The Mariners' second fixture will be against Perth at home, followed by a trip to Newcastle for the F3 derby in Round 3. The Jets open their season at home to Adelaide, followed by the short trip to Sydney in round 2.

Two other highlights of the opening rounds are a grand final rematch in round one with Brisbane travelling to Perth and Ange Postecoglou getting reunited with his championship-winning Roar side in the second round when his new club Melbourne Victory head to Suncorp Stadium.

Club officials have the opportunity to request amendments to the draw before its formal release on June 18.

Football Federation last night declined to comment on the detail of the draw, though there was confirmation that the new West Sydney team would not begin the season with a derby against Sydney FC.

"We gave the A-League clubs a draft version of the draw only this week, so it's too early to suggest the proposals are finalised," said FFA Head of Corporate Affairs, Kyle Patterson.

"We have worked hard to maximise the fans interest in the opening rounds, but currently the draft draw doesn't have the new Sydney derby on the opening night, purely because there are several other marquee games that could open the season in style. It's a nice problem to have."

Hopefully a huge Mariners yellow army turn out at Parramatta Stadium to welcome Fibro FC to the A-League.

Any thoughts/news on a new striker? I know GA said no rush but you'd think they want to sign sooner than later to get the best out of the pre-season

I'd day Arnie is looking for a striker in Europe but the transfer window does not open until next month. That doesn't mean we are waiting to actually buy someone but it's usually when contracts expire and we can snap up a target on a Bosman.

Does anyone know if the mariners HAL team are training at the moment? If yes, where and is it allowed for the public to go and watch training?

Ihink they start next week. I stopped by Soccer5s this morning and the young guys were training including Bernie and Tommy. The session was being run by Arnie, Moss and Clarky

Not sure when they are starting but most sessions are at Club Tuggerah. They don't seem to mind you lurking. If you turn up around 11 you will catch most of the session.

From the smurfs forum .... looks like we only have six players signed for more than a season with four spots left this season ...could be very smart with this year being the last of the existing media deal ...

If we loose Matty then we only have 18 ... I assume we must be looking to add to the squad...

We have 21 signed - they just can't count. Only 1 more signing to come apparently.

It will be interesting to see who we re-sign during the coming year with McBreen, Patrick and possibly Hutch likely to call it quits and Tommy and Maty itching to go OS.

better to loose ryan now than in january where it would disrupt our season...

give justice a pre season and the first month or so of the season to start owning the goals and he will do very well i think

Critics already saying we'll do well but that without recruiting heavily will struggle to be top.
Familiar? *grin*
There'll be a familiar result come end of season too I suspect. Few seem to rate consistency, this team knows each other well and are likely to simply be improving

Bit strange that keeping a stable team is seen as a disadvantage? Seems a bit bass ackwards.

Damn straight Adz. When you're last years premiers and you keep most of your team? Yep big concerns there.

In any case, when it comes to "recruiting heavily" Zac Anderson, Nick Montgomery, Duke, Oates and Caceres.

I suspect on top of a squad of proven quality players, our recruiting will also prove as good as anyones and likely better than most.

But regardless. It's not about individual "players" anywhere near so much as it is about "team" "club" and "coach"

The strongest team in the comp is looking, as ever, to take it up another notch.

Overlook us at your own peril.

Again.
And again...
And again.......
And again.................

I think the squad looks as strong as it did at the start of last season (especially in retrospect when we see the lack of time for some players. It looks considerably stronger than it did at the end of last season.

Since the start of last season we have seen the following changes:-

Simon-------Sterjovski
Wilko-------Anderson
Amini-------Rogic
Griffiths---Montgomery
Porter------Oates
Gallagher---Griffiths
Sutton------Duke
Musialik----Caceres

Wilko will be a loss. Though when you consider that at the end of last season we had no Simon and no Rostyn, Gallagher and Musialik didn't play, Porter hardly played and Sutton may as well not played then we seem to be considerably stronger than the end of last season.
